Effects of gellan-based coating application on litchi fruit quality traits
2018
The use of gellan-based coating formulation on litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn. ‘Wai Chee’) fruit was investigated in order to determine its ability to improve color conservation and to maintain the overall quality. Fruits were treated with gellanbased coating (0.5% w/v) and glycerol (3% w/v) after dipping in ascorbic acid (1.5% w/v) and then stored at 5°C and 90% relative humidity for 15 days. Changes in peel color, soluble solid content, tritatable acidity, weight loss, antioxidant activity and phenolic content, were measured. Formulations containing gellan-based coating exhibited slightly improved water barrier properties and showed their active role in maintaining color characteristics an…
Antioxidant capacity of infant fruit beverages: influence of storage and in vitro gastrointestinal digestion
2008
Reyes.Barbera@uv.es; M.J.Lagarda@uv.es; Rosaura.Farre@uv.es The total antioxidant capacity of three beverages based on fruit juice, milk and cereals, intended for infants and young children up to 3 years of age was evaluated by two methods Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity and Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity. Results: According to the total antioxidant values obtained by both methods, the beverages can be ranked as follows: grape-orange-banana > peach-apple > pineapple-banana. Ascorbic acid was the main contributor (60%) to the total antioxidant capacity, while the contribution of skimmed milk was less than 1.2%. After one month of storage at -20 ºC, significant losses (p < 0.05) in…
Use of chemical treatments to reduce browning color of white fresh-cut peaches, harvested in summer and late crop
2022
Fresh-cut white peach is very perishable and discoloration or browning are the main factors affecting consumer acceptability loss. Color and appearance attract the consumer to a product and can help in impulse purchase. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of two different edible coatings formulations in preserving freshcut fruit of the early ripening ‘Murtiddara’ and the late ripening ‘Settembrina’ peach landraces, belonging to the ‘Pesca di Bivona’ varietal population. Fruit sampled at commercial harvest stage, after cutting and dipping in different solutions with ascorbate calcium (ASC) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) were stored for 3, 5, 7 and 12 days at 5°C and…
Ascorbic Acid determination using linear sweep voltammetry on flexible electrode modified with gold nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide
2020
Indium tin oxide (ITO) coated on flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate electrode was modified with reduced graphene oxide and gold nanoparticles by simple co-electrodeposition performed at -0.8 V vs SCE for 200 s. All samples were characterized by electron scan microscopy. The as prepared electrode was used as electrochemical sensor to selective detection of ascorbic acid using linear sweep voltammetry. Excellent results were obtained in a linear range from 20 to 150 µM of ascorbic acid with a limit of detection of about 3.1 µM (S/N=3.3). The sensors have a reproducibility of about 5.5% and also show high selectivity towards different interferents such as chlorine, calcium, ma…
EFFECT OF FRUIT-SET TIME ON THE QUALITY PERFORMANCE OF ANNONA CHERIMOLA MILL. FRUIT
2019
The aim of this work was to analyze the differences between fruits obtained by different dates of fruit set and identify the proper fruit-set time that allows to obtain the optimum fruit quality in Annona cherimola cv Fino de Jete, planted in Southern Italy. Six fruit-set dates were selected from the first week of June to the second week of July. Fruits were sampled from October to November, when 1500 Growing Degree Days (DD) were accumulated; The DD were calculated using a base temperature of 12 °C. Fruit fresh weight (FW) and skin colour were measured. These parameters were measured also after storage, and in addition, the following parameters were measured: fruit shape (FS), pulp colour,…
The influence of Opuntia ficus-indica mucilage edible coating on the quality of ‘Hayward’ kiwifruit slices
2016
Abstract The aim of this work was to study the effect of mucilage edible coating extracted from Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI) on the quality and shelf life maintenance of packaged kiwifruit slices. OFI mucilage alone or added with TWEEN ® 20 were applied on kiwifruit fresh cut surfaces. After treatments, kiwifruit samples were stored under passive atmosphere at 5 ± 1 °C for 3, 5, 7 and 12 days. At each storage period, visual quality and flavor score, pectin content, ascorbic acid and the microbiological characteristics were measured together with CO 2 and O 2 content in the packages. Kiwifruit slices coated only with mucilage or with mucilage plus Tween 20, showed a significant higher firmness…
General oxidative stress during doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in rats: Absence of cardioprotection and low antioxidant efficiency of alpha-lipoi…
2012
International audience; To evaluate the effects of alpha-lipoic acid (AL) in a model of doxorubicin (DOX)-induced cardiotoxicity, male Wistar rats were treated with DOX (1 mg/kg/d; 10 d) in combination or not with AL (50 mg/kg/d; 15 d). Plasma oxidative stress was determined by hydroperoxides (ROOH) and the ascorbyl radical/ascorbate ratio. One and two months later, the functional parameters of the hearts were determined in vivo by catheterization and cardiac oxidative stress was assessed by malonedialdehyde (MDA) and O₂*⁻ (dihydroethidium fluorescence) content in tissue. After two months, body weight was higher in the DOX-AL group than in DOX (+16%), but this was due to ascites. Histologic…
Intravenous ascorbic acid to prevent and treat cancer-associated sepsis?
2011
Abstract The history of ascorbic acid (AA) and cancer has been marked with controversy. Clinical studies evaluating AA in cancer outcome continue to the present day. However, the wealth of data suggesting that AA may be highly beneficial in addressing cancer-associated inflammation, particularly progression to systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and multi organ failure (MOF), has been largely overlooked. Patients with advanced cancer are generally deficient in AA. Once these patients develop septic symptoms, a further decrease in ascorbic acid levels occurs. Given the known role of ascorbate in: a) maintaining endothelial and suppression of inflammatory markers; b) protection fro…
A green way to gamma-lactams through a copper catalyzed ARGET-ATRC in ethanol and in the presence of ascorbic acid
2011
Abstract A ‘green’ ARGET-ATRC, for the CuCl[PMDETA] catalysed cyclo -isomerization of N -allyl-α-polychloroamides to γ-lactams is described. The process works efficiently (yields 78–96%), uses a bio-solvent, as ethanol, and exploits the reducing feature of ascorbic acid to limit, at a low level (2–4%), the amount of catalyst. To preserve the efficacy of the catalytic cycle, addition of Na 2 CO 3 is essential, which quenches the HCl released during the CuCl[PMDETA] regeneration step. Profitable features of the process are: mild reaction temperatures (25–37 °C), relatively short reaction times (usually 5 h) and low solvent volumes (2 mmol of substrate/mL of ethanol). The method, upon stoichio…
